From where you write code to where you hand off work
Editors helped with characters, IDEs with projects, AI IDEs with a single edit. An ADE — Agentic Development Environment — works in units of tasks: hand several to several agents at once, and come back to results that finished while you were away.
Bolting AI onto an editor does not make it an ADE. These are the properties that separate a tool you watch one step at a time from an environment you hand work to. They are exactly the columns of the table below.
Many agents at once
Not a pile of windows — several tasks running together on one screen, each with a visible state.
Isolated per task
Each task gets its own worktree or sandbox, so parallel runs never step on each other's files.
Finishes without a watcher
It keeps going without an approval at every step, then notifies you or picks up the next job.
Starts on its own
Recurring work — every morning, every Friday — starts at its time with nobody at the keyboard.
Follow it from your phone
Away from the desk you can still see progress, queue the next instruction and read the result.
Your choice of agent
Not locked to one vendor's model — pick Claude Code, Codex and others per task.
Four generations of the editor
Each generation made the unit a person handles directly one step bigger.

You delegate, agents do
Hand work to several agents at once, let each run isolated to the end, and come back to review results.
